Privacy and data
This page says plainly what happens to information. For the website’s own privacy notice (the sign-up list) see Privacy.
Short version
Section titled “Short version”- The device keeps its settings on the device: tasks, contacts, the resident’s name, Wi-Fi password.
- It has no camera, no microphone in use, and no location tracking.
- With the Cloud plan, a copy of most settings, and the picture of the screen, is kept on the JeanScreen server so you can change things from anywhere.
- To make calls, send texts, speak reminders and send emails it uses other services, which see only what they need (listed below).
- We do not sell data and do not use advertising or analytics.
What stays on the device
Section titled “What stays on the device”- Your home Wi-Fi password. It is never copied to the cloud.
- Your setup-page password.
- The device’s secret key (see Security, below).
What the device sends to the server
Section titled “What the device sends to the server”| What | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Status: which tasks are ticked, Wi-Fi strength, temperature and humidity, version | About every minute | So the portal shows the real state, and offline alerts work. |
| A copy of the screen picture (a small compressed black-and-white image) | When it changes | So you can see what the resident sees. The server holds the latest one in memory, not in a file. |
| Settings (tasks, contacts, names) | When changed | So you can change them from anywhere and, with the Cloud plan, restore them to a replacement device. |
| Call Carer, reminder, missed-task, wellbeing, comfort-zone and daily-report events | When they happen | To place calls, send texts and push alerts. |
| Update checks | Every few hours | To find new software. |
What the server stores
Section titled “What the server stores”- Per device: its saved settings (including contact names and phone numbers), encrypted, and a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks seen at start-up (to help setup).
- Backups (Cloud plan): the last 5 versions of the settings, encrypted. The key is kept apart from the data. Backups belong to your account: a new owner of the device never sees them. Wi-Fi and passwords are never in a backup.
- Accounts: your name, email address, a scrambled (hashed) password, and which devices are on your account.
- A usage log: the type of event (for example “Call Carer pressed”, “SMS sent”), counts, and whether it worked. It does not store health information.
- Push subscriptions: a technical address for each phone that turned alerts on.
Other services that handle some of it
Section titled “Other services that handle some of it”| Service | For | What it sees |
|---|---|---|
| Twilio | Phone calls and text messages | Contact phone numbers, and the words of the call or text (which include the resident’s name and task names). |
| Amazon Web Services (Polly, Translate) | Speaking reminders and translating them | The words to speak: the resident’s first name and task names. |
| An email provider | Daily report emails | The contact’s email and the report. |
| Stripe | Payments | Billing details are handled by Stripe. |
| Google, Apple, Mozilla push services | Delivering alerts to phones | An encrypted message. It includes the resident’s first name or device name and the first few unfinished task names. |
| Cloudflare | Carrying traffic to the server | Encrypted traffic. |
| Your calendar and news providers | Calendar and headlines | The server visits the address you pasted. |
Security in brief
Section titled “Security in brief”- Each device has its own random secret key and proves who it is on every request. A device cannot touch another device’s data.
- Adding a device to an account needs the device ID and the pairing code that appears only on the device. The server never sees the code itself, only a scrambled check value.
- The setup page needs a password you choose. After five wrong tries it pauses for a minute.
- The carer portal reaches the device’s settings through short-lived, single-use links.
- Calendar and news addresses are checked so they cannot be used to reach private networks.
- The setup page on the device uses plain HTTP, on the device’s own Wi-Fi or your home network. That is fine at home, but do not use it on a network you do not trust.
Your choices and deleting data
Section titled “Your choices and deleting data”- Remove a device in the portal: it unlinks the device and deletes the saved settings and screen from the cloud. Your encrypted backups of it are kept for 30 days (so you can restore them to a replacement), then deleted.
- A reset on the device wipes its own settings and takes it off every account. Backups are kept 30 days, the same as above (Hidden controls).
- A backup file you download from the device is locked with a password you choose. Keep it safe: it holds the resident’s routine and your contacts’ numbers.
- To close your account or have your information deleted, email us (link at the bottom of the page).
- Phone numbers belong to other people. Tell your contacts that they are on the list.
