First setup
Allow about ten minutes. You need your phone and your home Wi-Fi password. The screen guides you through three short screens, moved along with button 8 (the bottom one).
-
Plug in the power.
Plug the power adapter into the wall and into JeanScreen. It plays a start-up sound and the screen refreshes once (a quick black-and-white flash is normal on e-paper). The first screen says “Step 1: Plug in the power”.
Screen 1. Illustration. Press button 8 (the bottom paddle, marked Next on the screen).
-
Join the device’s own Wi-Fi.
Screen 2 shows a QR code, a network name (it looks like
JeanScreen-B8A0) and a password. Each device has its own random password, so yours is different from anyone else’s.- Easy way: open your phone’s camera and point it at the QR code. Tap the message that appears to join the network.
- By hand: open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, choose the network name shown, and type the password.
Screen 2. Illustration (the QR code here is a drawing and will not scan). Your phone may say the network has “no internet”. That is expected: this network is only for talking to JeanScreen. Stay connected, then press button 8 again.
-
Open the setup page.
Screen 3 shows another QR code and a six-digit setup code.
- Scan the QR code. The setup page opens and signs in with the code for you.
- Or open your phone’s browser, type
http://192.168.4.1, and type the setup code. Spaces and capital letters do not matter.
Screen 3. Illustration. On some phones a window called “Sign in to Wi-Fi” opens by itself. That is fine, you can carry on in it. It cannot open links though, so use the instructions it shows at the end.
-
Choose your own password.
The page asks you to choose a password for the setup page: at least 8 characters, typed twice. Keep it somewhere safe. You will use it each time you open the device’s own page. The Show button lets you check what you typed.
Five wrong tries in a row lock sign-in for a minute. Wait and try again.
-
Connect to your home Wi-Fi.
Choose your network from the list, type its password, and press Connect. This can take up to a minute. Your phone may drop off the JeanScreen Wi-Fi for a few seconds while the device joins your router. That is normal. The page waits and carries on when your phone is back.
- If your network is not in the list, choose Other network and type its name exactly.
- Scan again refreshes the list.
- Skip for now lets you carry on without Wi-Fi. Many features need Wi-Fi, so you will want to do this later (see Wi-Fi and moving).
The clock sets itself. The page sends your phone’s time zone to the device when it connects, so the time on the screen is right for where you are. There is nothing to type. The device then follows daylight saving by itself, and JeanScreen keeps its time-zone rules up to date when it is online. Until a time zone has been set, the device runs on UTC (world time) and its page shows Set your time zone at the top. Press Use … to take your phone’s time zone, or Choose it myself.
-
Finish.
The page says Connected! and the screen swaps the setup screens for the everyday screen: time, date, tasks. Switch your phone back to your normal Wi-Fi. The page then shows the web address of the carer portal. Open it in your phone’s browser to continue.
What next
Section titled “What next”- Create your carer portal account and add the device.
- Add the tasks and reminder times.
- Add family contacts for Call Carer and reports.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”- The screen is blank or shows nothing. Check the power. The setup screens appear only on a device with no home Wi-Fi saved.
- The setup code is not accepted. Re-read the six digits on the screen. If you have lost it, hold buttons 1 and 8 for 15 seconds (see Hidden controls): the device wipes its settings and makes new codes.
- The page will not load. Check your phone is still on the
JeanScreen-…network, not your home one. - More in Troubleshooting.
